Zealand Pharma reports successful phase I/IIa trial with ZP10 in type 2 diabetes patients

Zealand Pharma announces promising results from a study with its lead compound ZP10 in type 2 diabetic patients.

The double-blind, placebo-controlled study assessed the safety, tolerability and efficacy of ZP10 in 28 subjects with type 2 diabetes. Each subject received a single dose of ZP10 (1 to 40 μg) or placebo and ingested a glucose loaded meal 1 hour after dosing.

No safety issues were identified during the study and the data indicated that ZP10 was tolerated at doses up to 20 μg. There was a dose dependent lowering of plasma glucose concentrations following ZP10 administration compared to placebo. A near-maximum effect was seen at a dose level at which no side effects were observed. Additionally ZP10 was demonstrated to increase insulin secretion and reduce post-meal increases in glucagon concentration.

ZP10 is an analogue of Exendin-4, which acts on the GLP-1 receptor. The results of the study are very encouraging for the further development of the compound as a novel therapy for type 2 diabetes.

Currently, Zealand is seeking a partner for further development of the compound.
