Obesity is now the fastest growing global epidemic with over 300 million people classified as obese and more than 1 billion adults that are overweight (prone for obesity). Obesity is associated with a severe increase in morbidity related to disorders of the cardiovascular system (e.g. hypertension, diabetes, stroke, and heart attacks), joints (arthritis), skin (e.g. ulcers, infections), and cancer.
Despite its recognition as an epidemic, obesity largely remains an unsolved medical problem, which is caused by the increased consumption of energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods and by reduced physical activity. Obesity is a complex condition, which affects all ages and socio-economic groups.
All but the most severe of cases can be successfully managed through lifestyle changes in diet and physical activity alone. However, low compliance has encouraged our interest in the development of an effective pharmacological therapy.
