Isolated Systolic Hypertension

High blood pressure is a strong risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity.  Thus, inadequate treatment of high blood pressure is associated with increased risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, renal disease, and heart failure.  Isolated systolic hypertension, the presence of increased systolic blood pressure (>140 mm Hg) in the absence of increased diastolic blood pressure (<90 mm Hg), has emerged as an important predictor of cardiovascular morbidity. Interestingly, clinical evidence indicates that isolated systolic hypertension is associated with a 40% increased likelihood of perioperative cardiovascular morbidity among patients who had coronary artery bypass grafting surgery.  Nevertheless, the importance of isolated systolic hypertension in the perioperative setting has not been appreciated and no currently marketed drugs have been developed for this novel niche-indication in the hypertension market.
