Zealand Pharma’s development candidate ZP2929 is a dual Glucagon-GLP-1 agonist aiming to provide a novel treatment option for people with Type 2 diabetes and obesity.
In humans, the endogenous peptide hormone Oxyntomodulin is known to have multiple beneficial effects on metabolism and obesity. Oxyntomodulin is secreted from L cells of the small intestine in response to meal ingestion, and is believed to exert its biological effects by activating both the GLP-1 receptor and the glucagon receptor.
ZP2929 is a novel, potent, long-acting dual Glucagon-GLP-1 agonist aiming to mimic the metabolic actions of Oxyntomodulin. In rodent models of obesity and Type 2 diabetes, ZP2929 has been demonstrated to improve glycaemic control as well as to induce significant and sustained body weight loss.
ZP2929 entered preclinical development in 2009. Zealand Pharma aims to conduct safety pharmacological and toxicolocical studies supporting Phase I clinical trials. The aim of the Phase I clinical trials is to establish safety and tolerability as well as to evaluate the pharmacokinetics of ZP2929 in humans.
