ZP1848

ZP1848

ZP1848 is a potent and selective GLP-2 agonist that is targeted to offer a novel treatment option for patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease) because of the compound’s regenerative effect on the intestinal epithelial surface and enhancement of intestinal function. The concept of administering GLP-2 agonists as a therapeutic for gastrointestinal disorders has been validated.

GLP-2 is a naturally occurring peptide hormone produced primarily by the small intestine. It is secreted in response to food ingestion and acts through binding to the GLP-2 receptor, which is predominantly found in the gastrointestinal tract. GLP-2 plays a key role in intestinal growth and formation, and it promotes regeneration of the epithelial surface upon damage as in the case of progressive inflammation and degeneration caused by Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

ZP1848 works by enhancing the healing of the intestine lining during and after an inflammatory episode in the gut. Working locally at the site of damage, ZP1848 thus represents a promising new therapeutic approach compared to existing treatments, which for the major part decrease the inflammation through a systemic suppressing effect on the immune system with a relatively high risk of side-effects.

Zealand Pharma has conducted a Phase Ia single dose study with ZP1848 in healthy volunteers and a Phase Ib multiple dose study in patients with Crohn's Disease in US were completed in 2010. ZP1848 proved to be well tolerated in both healthy volunteers and in patients with Crohn’s Disease. Zealand Pharma is currently preparing a Phase IIa study to evaluate the effect and safety of ZP1848 as a novel treatment for patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
